Re: Coming out to someone.

Re: Coming out to someone.

I know often when we first come to the realization that we’re MAPs, we want to come out to the world and get it off of our chest. I know several MAPs who have felt that way, myself included. I made the mistake of coming out to everyone I knew on Myspace. It felt great to get it off my chest. I felt liberated. But I lost 2/3 of my friends, and a lot of my family disowned me… I still feel the effects of that decision, now 15 years later. If I could go back and do it all again, I wouldn’t have done that.

I wish we lived in a world that is accepting of us, but unfortunately, that’s just not the case. Now when I meet new people, I don’t volunteer that information. Not because I’m ashamed, because I’m not… but because I know it’s something they won’t understand, and there’s no point in adding that element to every new relationship. I don’t wanna deal with the drama it causes.

You have us here. You might find a tightknit MAP group. You might have a few empathetic friends or family members. You may have a supportive therapist. The whole world doesn’t need to know your business.
